Can I use my expired BRP to travel back to the UK in 2026?

Accepted Answer

No. GOV.UK says all BRPs have expired and can no longer be used for travel to the UK. You should travel with your valid passport or travel document linked to your UKVI account and check your eVisa before the journey.

Can an expired BRP still be used to create a UKVI account?

Accepted Answer

In some cases, yes. Current GOV.UK guidance allows an expired BRP to be used for UKVI account access or setup for a limited period, subject to the stated time limit and 31 December 2026 long-stop date. Check the account-setup page for the rule that applies when you act.

What should I do after renewing my Indian passport?

Accepted Answer

Sign in to your UKVI account and use the official update-details service to add the new passport information. Before travelling, check that the current passport is recorded and that the eVisa information matches your travel details.

Do I need an ETA if I already have a UK eVisa?

Accepted Answer

Normally no. GOV.UK says you do not need an ETA if you already have permission to be in the UK, such as a UK visa, indefinite leave to remain, settled status or pre-settled status. An ETA and an eVisa serve different purposes.

How long does an eVisa share code last?

Accepted Answer

Current GOV.UK guidance says a share code lasts for 90 days and can be used more than once before it expires. Generate the code for the correct purpose, such as travel, right to work or right to rent.

What if the airline cannot see my eVisa?

Accepted Answer

You can provide a travel share code if additional proof is requested. GOV.UK also says to ask the carrier to contact the UK Border Force carrier support hub if it cannot check your eVisa.

My eVisa shows the wrong name or status. What should I do?

Accepted Answer

Use the official GOV.UK report-an-error service when the eVisa itself is wrong. If your personal details have genuinely changed, use the UKVI account update service instead. Do not create a new account to fix a display error.

Does my child need a separate UKVI account?

Accepted Answer

A child who needs an eVisa needs their own UKVI account to access it. A parent or another appropriate person can manage the account on the child’s behalf where needed.

I have ILR in an old passport but no eVisa. What should I do?

Accepted Answer

If you have eligible legacy evidence of ILR or ILE and do not already have an eVisa, you may need a No Time Limit application. Current Home Office guidance says NTL applications are free and successful applicants receive an eVisa.
