How to Use This Retirement Calculator
How Retirement Income & Projections Are Calculated
Accumulation: Your savings grow via contributions and compound returns until your target retirement age. Drawdown: A safe withdrawal rate (SWR) converts the final balance into an annual or monthly income. Using a real (inflation-adjusted) rate shows results in today’s money.
Formulas With Examples (Step-By-Step)
- Future value to retirement (m compounding periods/yr):
FV = P(1 + r/m)^{m·t} + PMT × \frac{(1 + r/m)^{m·t} - 1}{(r/m)} - Real (inflation-adjusted) rate (approx):
r_real ≈ \frac{1+r}{1+i} - 1 - Income from balance (safe withdrawal):
Income_{annual} = SWR × FV_{real},Income_{monthly} = Income_{annual}/12 - Required balance for target income:
FV_{required} = \frac{Target\_Income_{annual}}{SWR} - Required monthly contribution (solve for PMT):
PMT = \left(FV - P(1+r/m)^{m·t}\right)\frac{r/m}{(1+r/m)^{m·t}-1}
Worked example: Age 35 → retire at 65 (t = 30 yrs), P = £20,000, PMT = £300/mo, nominal return 7%, inflation 2.5%, SWR = 4%, m = 12.
Accumulation gives FV ≈ £445k nominal. Real balance (≈ 4.39% real) ≈ £270k; SWR income ≈ £10.8k/yr or £900/mo in today’s money. (Rounded; fees/taxes excluded.)
Assumptions: Contributions at period end, constant average return, no withdrawals before retirement, and no fees/taxes unless your widget includes them.
