How to Use This Investment Calculator

  • Use realistic long-term return assumptions (e.g., 3–8% nominal) based on your risk profile.
  • Higher compounding frequency increases growth slightly; monthly vs annual often differs modestly.
  • Increase contributions early — time in the market boosts compounding.
  • For “real” (inflation-adjusted) results, use a real rate ≈ (1+return)/(1+inflation) − 1.

Understanding Investment Growth

Compound growth adds returns on both your original amount and the returns already earned. With regular contributions, each deposit compounds from the time it’s invested. Return rate, compounding frequency, contribution size, and time horizon drive the final value.

Formulas Used with Worked Examples

  • Future value with contributions (m compounding periods/yr): FV = P(1 + r/m)^{m·t} + PMT × \frac{(1 + r/m)^{m·t} - 1}{(r/m)}
  • Real (inflation-adjusted) rate (approx): r_real ≈ \frac{1+r}{1+i} - 1
  • Total contributions: Total\_Paid = P + PMT × 12 × t (if PMT is monthly)

Worked example: P = £5,000, PMT = £200/month, annual return r = 7%, m = 12, t = 10 years.
FV ≈ £44,665. Total paid = £5,000 + £200×12×10 = £29,000 → growth ≈ £15,665. (Rounded; excludes fees/taxes.)

Assumptions: Constant average return, contributions at period end, no withdrawals, and no trading costs or taxes unless your widget includes them.

Investment Calculator FAQs

Lump sum (optional), monthly contribution, annual return, compounding frequency and time horizon. Inflation is optional.

No. Markets fluctuate. This is an educational projection based on average return assumptions.

Use a real rate: roughly (1+return)/(1+inflation) − 1. Some widgets allow an inflation toggle to show values in today’s money.

Earlier increases have the biggest long-term impact because each deposit compounds longer.

No, unless your widget has fields for them. Fees/taxes reduce returns. Add them separately if needed.
